Dizziness and Vertigo Treatment in Asheville NC

Vertigo and dizziness are disorienting and sometimes frightening, but most cases have a clear mechanical cause and respond well to the right treatment. Dr. Mark at Blue Ridge Chiropractic identifies which type you have before doing anything. Call (828) 274-1122.

Young Women with Dizziness Signs

Dizziness and vertigo are more common than most people expect, and most patients are surprised to learn how treatable they are. If you have been dealing with a spinning feeling, episodes of unsteadiness, or a foggy off-balance sensation that comes and goes, there is almost always a clear reason behind it. The key is figuring out which type you are dealing with, because vertigo and general dizziness are not the same thing, and they do not get better with the same treatment.

At Blue Ridge Chiropractic, Dr. Mark identifies which type you have before he does anything. That step is everything. Getting the type wrong means treating the wrong thing, and patients end up going months without real improvement. Getting it right usually means results come fast.

Vertigo vs. Dizziness: What Is the Difference?

Vertigo is the feeling that you or the room is spinning when nothing is actually moving. It usually comes on with specific head movements and can be quite sudden and intense. Dizziness is a broader word that covers feeling lightheaded, off-balance, or like the world is slightly unreliable without a spinning sensation. Both can be caused by things that chiropractic care treats very well, but knowing which one you have tells Dr. Mark exactly where to look.

BPPV: The Most Common Type of Vertigo

BPPV stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. It is a mouthful, but the cause is actually quite simple. Tiny crystals inside your inner ear that are supposed to stay in one place sometimes break loose and drift into the wrong part of the ear canal. When your head moves in certain directions, those crystals cause a false signal in your balance system and you feel like you are spinning.

BPPV has a very recognizable pattern. The spinning usually:

● Lasts less than a minute but feels intense while it is happening

● Is triggered by rolling over in bed, sitting up quickly, or tipping the head back

● Comes on suddenly without any warning

● Settles when you hold still but returns with the same head movement

The treatment for BPPV is called the Epley maneuver, a guided sequence of head and body movements that moves the crystals back where they belong. It is gentle, takes about ten to fifteen minutes, and most patients feel significant relief during or right after the procedure. Dr. Mark also teaches you a version you can do at home if symptoms ever come back.

Did you know? BPPV is the single most common cause of vertigo and accounts for roughly half of all dizziness cases seen in clinical settings. It is also one of the fastest conditions to treat when the correct repositioning maneuver is performed. Many patients who have been dealing with it for months resolve in one to three visits.

Cervicogenic Dizziness: When the Neck Is the Cause

This type of dizziness does not come from the inner ear at all. It comes from the upper part of your neck, specifically the joints at C1 and C2 just below the base of your skull. Those joints are packed with sensors that tell your brain where your head is in space. When those joints are stiff, misaligned, or surrounded by tight muscles, the signals they send get scrambled, and your brain interprets that as dizziness or a floating feeling.

Cervicogenic dizziness tends to feel different from BPPV. It is usually more of a persistent fogginess or off-balance feeling rather than a sharp spinning episode, and it is often accompanied by neck stiffness or headaches at the base of the skull. It is very common in people who have had a whiplash injury or a lot of tension in the upper neck from desk work.

Treatment focuses on restoring normal movement to the C1 and C2 joints through chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work on the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull. Most patients notice a reduction in dizziness within the first few visits.
