Wrist Pain

Wrist pain from climbing, mountain biking, or long keyboard sessions tends to sneak up on you. One week it's a mild ache, a month later you're adjusting how you grip everything. Blue Ridge Chiropractic in Asheville NC finds the source and fixes it. Call (828) 274-1122 for same-day care.

Young Man with Wrist Pain

Wrist pain often starts small and slowly takes over. You notice it while climbing, after a long day at the keyboard, or when reaching for something awkward. You rest it, it calms down, and then it comes right back the next time you load it. If that cycle sounds familiar, the issue usually is not a lack of rest. Many people begin exploring chiropractic care when they realize the underlying cause of the pain has never been identified.

At Blue Ridge Chiropractic, we approach wrist pain the same way we approach any joint problem: we first find what is actually driving it before starting treatment. For many patients, that means looking beyond the wrist itself, because the nerves and mechanics that influence the wrist often come from higher up the chain.

What Causes Wrist Pain

The wrist is made up of eight small carpal bones that need to move in precise coordination. When any of those bones lose their normal motion, surrounding tendons, ligaments, and nerves start compensating in ways that produce pain. Common causes we see include:

- Repetitive gripping from climbing, cycling, or desk work gradually loading the wrist beyond its recovery capacity

- Carpal bone restriction from a past fall or impact that was never properly treated

- Nerve compression at the wrist from tight forearm flexors and the tendons that share the carpal tunnel

- Cervical nerve irritation at the C6 or C7 level, which refers pain and weakness directly into the wrist and hand

That last point trips a lot of people up. If you have been treating your wrist for months without lasting improvement, there is a real chance the problem is coming from your neck, not your wrist.

Signs You Might Have a Wrist Problem

Wrist issues can show up in different ways depending on which structures are involved:

- Pain or aching when gripping, twisting, or bearing weight on the hand

- A clicking or catching sensation inside the wrist during movement

- Weakness or difficulty with tasks like opening jars, typing, or climbing

- Morning stiffness that takes time to loosen up

- Tingling into the thumb, index, or middle fingers during activity

Wrist Pain and the Cervical Spine

The median, ulnar, and radial nerves all originate in the neck and travel down through the shoulder, elbow, and forearm to the hand. Restriction in the lower cervical spine can produce wrist and hand symptoms that look exactly like a local wrist problem. This is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in persistent wrist pain.

At Blue Ridge Chiropractic, our evaluation always includes the neck and shoulder alongside the wrist. We test nerve tension through the full arm, assess carpal mobility, and look at forearm mechanics before we decide where care should focus.

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Treatment depends on what the evaluation finds, but typically involves:

- Chiropractic adjustments to the restricted carpal bones to restore normal wrist mechanics

- Soft tissue work on tight forearm flexors and extensors that put constant tension on the wrist

- Cervical adjustments when nerve root involvement is identified

- Guidance on activity modification while recovery progresses

Most patients start noticing improvement within the first few visits once the right structures are being treated.
